Follow-up examinations
It was supposed to be just another day. Barbara wasn’t expecting anything out of the ordinary from her routine breast exam in 2021. She just wanted to get it over with and get back to her daily routine. But this time was different. A moment of silence fell over the exam room—one that lasted just a little too long.
Then everything happened very quickly. Further tests, consultations, and results all pointed to one diagnosis. I was diagnosed with breast cancer that had metastasized to the liver, lungs, and brain.
Long-term treatment
In the years that followed, Barbara’s life turned into a never-ending struggle. Hospitals and various wards became a constant part of her daily life. During that time, she underwent 10 surgeries, each of which left a lasting mark. There was chemotherapy, which sapped her strength day after day. There was radiation therapy, which was just as taxing. She also underwent treatment using a gamma knife.
One of the brain surgeries turned out to be a turning point. When she woke up, Barbara sensed that something was wrong. The left side of her body was no longer responding as it had before.
The doctors diagnosed him with paralysis.
Difficult everyday life
The treatment has also yielded important information. Very positive test results have recently come in. The metastases in the liver and spine have disappeared. No new lesions have appeared in the brain. These are moments of relief in the long treatment process.
However, Barbara remains in intensive care. She has been undergoing chemotherapy every two weeks for nearly two years. The treatment must continue in order to maintain the results achieved so far.
Her daily life isn't easy these days. Regular visits to specialists and physical therapy are meant to help her regain at least some of her mobility, step by step.
Pain has become a constant part of her day. On top of that, she has epilepsy, which makes it even harder for her to function.
Barbara's condition is also linked to a mutation in the BRCA1 gene, which increases the risk of cancer and requires constant, very close medical monitoring.
Help is needed
Barbara is currently on disability. Her family supports her in her daily life and has become her greatest source of strength. Her world has changed dramatically. Her hands used to be constantly busy: she did decoupage, loved to embroider, and read books in the evenings. Paralysis took those passions away from her. Barbara, however, did not give up. She found a new hobby in putting together jigsaw puzzles.
However, ongoing treatment every two weeks involves significant costs, regular trips to treatment sessions, and the purchase of medications, vitamins, and supplements to support a body weakened by long-term chemotherapy.
Barbara needs support today so she can continue her treatment and rehabilitation.
There are stories that teach patience and perseverance. In moments like these, the presence and attentiveness of another person are invaluable.
