Marika is doing well; she loves playing outside with her peers.

Her smile gives us hope and reminds us that even after the most difficult experiences, she is still able to find joy in everyday life.

Behind her smile, however, lies an extremely challenging journey. Following a complex brain surgery, Marika is dealing with many of the aftereffects of her illness. She has limited vision in her left eye, exotropia in her right eye, and an enlarged right lateral ventricle. Her speech development also requires intensive support. Marika remains under the constant care of specialists who help her take small steps forward every day.

Marika also sees a psychologist and a physical therapist on a regular basis. She is coping with left-sided spastic paresis. Her rehabilitation is starting to show results; her leg is becoming more and more functional, although her hand still needs more time, patience, and daily practice. Every bit of progress, no matter how small, is a source of immense joy for her loved ones.

But that’s not the end of her treatment. Marika undergoes chemotherapy every week. The MRI in May brought good news: the disease remains stable. This doesn’t mean the fight is over, but it gives her something priceless: hope and a moment to catch her breath.

Marika still has a long road ahead of her, filled with rehabilitation, doctor's visits, and more challenges. Despite everything, she shows us what true courage is every single day.

Behind Marika's sixth operation

October 10 Marika underwent another operation, the sixth in her life, involving the excision of a brain tumor about six centimeters in diameter. It was an extremely complicated and high-risk procedure, lasting as long as seven hours. After its completion, the girl spent the next Twenty-two hours under a ventilator in the intensive care unit. The surgical wounds are healing slowly, and the swelling in the brain and eye is gradually subsiding. Each day brings small signs of improvement, which for the family is a source of great hope.

The effects of the surgery that was performed

Although the surgery was necessary, it left behind a serious neurological sequelae. Marika struggles with hemiparesis on the left side of her body, Which makes it impossible for her to maintain a stable sitting position, let alone move independently. In addition, the surgery has caused Limitation of the visual field in the left eye. To support the recovery process, Intensive physiotherapy was started. Rehabilitation is expected to help rebuild muscle strength and restore motor control. Doctors have also recommended the purchase of knee and foot orthoses, necessary to prevent contractures and to begin learning to walk.

Molecular testing

During the operation A section of the tumor was taken and submitted for molecular testing. Their results will help accurately determine the nature of the cancer and will enable the selection of targeted therapy tailored to the individual genetic profile of the disease. Chemotherapy doesn't work - tumors still growing❗

After 10 doses of chemotherapy, doctors hoped to stop the disease. Unfortunately, a follow-up MRI showed the opposite - the chemotherapy given did not work, and the tumors grew larger. This meant a change in the treatment regime: introducing new drugs and subjecting Marika to another operation.

Endless treatments and tests

Marika is undergoing another blood transfusion - this is the seventh time. Each such procedure is a huge strain on her little body. On top of that, there are MRIs, check-ups and tests - a never-ending cycle to see how long her body can still withstand this uneven battle.

A daily life full of pain

Marika is only three years old, and her childhood is already filled with tremendous pain and suffering. Treatment is ongoing and may take a very long time. Every day is a struggle - not only against the disease, but also against the helplessness that the whole family feels.

Side effects of chemo

Chemotherapy has robbed Marika of a normal childhood. She can't play in the sun - the drugs make her skin extremely susceptible to burns. She requires special nutrition to gain weight. Taste changes caused by the treatment make her refuse to drink, and every cup of liquid is a daily, often losing battle for her parents. August 19, 2025
