Persistent pain

In February , knee pain appeared that would not go away. At first, it looked like overexertion or growing pains. Over the following weeks, conservative treatment, orthotics, and pain relief patches were tried, but there was no improvement. It was only after an X-ray and further diagnostics at the University Children's Clinical Hospital in Białystok that the real cause of the pain was revealed. In April, after a biopsy, the diagnosis was made: high-grade osteosarcoma – an aggressive bone cancer requiring immediate treatment.

Intensive treatment

Treatment began without delay, initially at the UDSK in Białystok, and then continued at the Mother and Child Institute in Warsaw. Szymon underwent chemotherapy according to the MAP protocol. The therapy was very stressful, and complications from an incorrectly placed central line, including thrombosis, proved to be an additional challenge .

The change of hospital, isolation, and long stays in the ward were particularly difficult for Szymon. He rebelled, did not want to go to Warsaw again, and felt that his teenage life had been suddenly interrupted. These emotions were a natural reaction to the illness and treatment that took away his everyday life as he knew it before the diagnosis.

Surgery and further treatment

On July 22 , a life-saving operation was performed . Part of the right femur affected by cancer was removed and an endoprosthesis was implanted. Thiswas followed by postoperative chemotherapy, which resulted in a sharp decline in blood parameters, transfusions, and further hospitalizations .

It is a life of constant tension, marked by tests, checkups, and fear of recurrence. During his treatment, Szymon also took part in a clinical trial of a new antiemetic drug to reduce the troublesome side effects of the treatment.

The family carries everything together

Szymon's illness affects the whole family. His mother is with him almost constantly, devoting all her energy to her son. "Be strong every day, even when you can't breathe" is the principle that guides her every day.His father combines his professional work with caring for and supporting his son. His older sister Karolina, a student,also plays an important role. Despite her own difficulties, she is a huge support to Szymon and often helps him through moments of doubt.

Isolation, mobility restrictions, and long hospital stays are particularly difficult for Szymon. He misses his peers and normal everyday life. At the same time, he tries not to give up on his dreams— he is interested in programming, studies remotely, creates his own projects, and plans for a future in which treatment will no longer be the central focus of his life.

It also entails costly trips to Warsaw, months of rehabilitation, the purchase of non-refundable medications and orthopedic equipment, psychological care, and daily expenses that quickly add up and become an increasing burden on the family.
