A lump that turned out to be cancer
In February of this year, Tomasz’s wife felt a lump in his left breast. At first, the family was at a loss and didn’t know exactly what they were dealing with. It wasn’t until further tests and diagnostics that they received the devastating diagnosis: invasive ductal carcinoma of the left breast with isolated cancer cells present. It was a huge shock for the whole family. Breast cancer is mainly associated with women, so the realization that Tomasz was among the small percentage of men who develop this disease was even harder to accept.
The operation did not end the fighting
On April 17, 2026, Tomasz underwent a mastectomy of his entire left breast and tumor removal. The family had hoped that after the surgery, treatment would be limited to oral medication. Unfortunately, subsequent test results showed that the situation was more complicated. Doctors are considering chemotherapy and want to perform a specialized Oncotype test, which will determine exactly whether chemotherapy is truly necessary and which form of treatment will be most effective. This test is not covered by insurance, and its cost is nearly 10,000 zlotys. For a family that has been dealing with treatment and the effects of a previous stroke for many months now, this is a huge financial burden.
The illness changed the whole family's life
Tomasz lives with his wife Ewa in Straszyn, near Gdańsk. Together, they are trying to adjust to a new reality filled with medical tests, doctor’s appointments, and constant stress. The family is very close-knit, and despite the difficulties, everyone is doing their best to support Tomasz. Their daughter Julia, a psychology student, gave up a job opportunity abroad to stay home and help organize Tomasz’s treatment and the family’s daily life. Their sons provide logistical and financial support, while their youngest daughter, Malwina, supports the family from afar. Despite the overwhelming emotions, they strive to stay together and fight to maintain a sense of normalcy in their daily lives.
A dad who loves the simple life
Tomasz loves his job as a tram driver in Gdańsk, spending time with his family, walking his beloved dog Tosia, and traveling, which has always been his great passion. However, after suffering a stroke and being diagnosed with cancer, his daily life has changed completely. The illness has robbed him of his sense of stability and security, and the future has become a great unknown. The biggest challenge today is finding his footing in this new reality, where everything changes very quickly and new decisions and treatment costs arise practically every day.
