Throughout her life, Beata valued peace, culture, and art. She loved the theater, books, and painting, which allowed her to pause for a moment amid the daily rush. Everything changed in April 2023, when a simple stomachache turned out to be the beginning of a dramatic fight for her life. The diagnosis came suddenly and completely transformed her daily life.
The few days that changed everything
In April 2023, Beata began experiencing lower abdominal pain and a strong urge to urinate. On April 18, she saw a gynecologist. She was admitted to the hospital that same day. Three days later, she underwent extensive surgery.
The doctors removed her ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, omentum, and part of her vagina. The diagnosis was clear: high-grade 3G malignant ovarian cancer with a BRCA2 mutation. In an instant, Beata’s life became all about treatment and the fight against cancer.
Devastating treatment and side effects
After the surgery, a long and very grueling course of cancer treatment began. Starting in June 2023, Beata underwent chemotherapy based on paclitaxel and carboplatin. Unfortunately, after six doses, paclitaxel had to be discontinued due to severe neuropathic peripheral pain. Despite the complications, treatment had to continue. Additional drugs were added, and the treatment was extended.
Later, Beata was enrolled in a clinical trial using Olaparib, which she took for two years. Although the main phase of treatment has ended, the disease remains a part of her daily life. Every six months, she must undergo follow-up exams to check for metastases or a recurrence of the cancer. Each subsequent checkup brings immense stress and anxiety about the future.
Loneliness in Illness
Beata lives alone. Her children live abroad and are rarely able to visit her in person. Daily life has become extremely difficult for her since her illness—both physically and emotionally. She struggles not only with the effects of cancer treatment, but also with asthma, glaucoma, and chronic neuropathic pain, all of which make it difficult for her to function normally.
The biggest challenge remains simply getting by. The pension she receives is largely consumed by rent, bills, and basic living expenses. After paying for those, very little is left for daily necessities, medical treatment, and medication. An additional problem is the cost of non-reimbursable medications and rehabilitation, as well as the need to maintain a car, which allows her to get to doctor’s appointments and retain at least some degree of independence.
Art gives her strength
Despite everything she has been through, Beata continues to find peace in the things that have always been close to her heart. She loves culture, theater, art galleries, and books. Painting holds a special place in her life, as it helps her escape—if only for a moment—from the fear, loneliness, and difficult reality she faces in the wake of her illness.
The funds raised will go toward non-reimbursable medications, physical therapy, psychological counseling, and repairs to Beata’s car, which is her only means of getting around on her own. Please support Beata. Every bit of help gives her a chance at a more peaceful life after difficult treatment, the opportunity to continue fighting for her health, and to regain at least a little sense of security in her daily life, which has been dominated by her illness for the past two years.
