Initially, he developed graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), which first affected his skin, making it look as if he had suffered severe burns. The disease then spread to his intestines and liver, causing Kacper to experience abdominal pain, diarrhea, and significantly elevated liver enzymes. Just when it seemed that his condition was under control, further complications arose—this time, the transplant attacked his lungs. Kacper felt increasingly worse; his oxygen saturation dropped, his throat hurt, and he was noticeably weakened. Meanwhile, he also developed a BKV virus infection, which caused hemorrhagic cystitis. Just when it seemed that the situation had stabilized, another complication arose—a Clostridium infection. This required a bacterial flora transplant, which continues to this day. Every two weeks, Kacper must visit the clinic for intravenous medication and follow-up tests. Last winter, graft-versus-host disease caused damage to his esophagus, forcing Kacper to spend another extended period in the hospital. In December, he began experiencing back pain and excessive sweating, which alarmed the doctors, who decided to perform a bone marrow biopsy out of concern for a relapse. Fortunately, in January, the long-awaited results came back, ruling out a relapse. However, the difficulties did not end there—further complications arose, this time affecting his eyes. An eye exam revealed that Kacper suffers from dry eyes, which is also a result of graft-versus-host disease. Kacper started school in September 2024, but it is difficult to predict how long he will be able to continue his education. His health has already deteriorated due to another viral infection, which caused elevated CRP levels and required a course of antibiotics. Kacper is still taking post-transplant medications, undergoing physical therapy, and has started psychological therapy. The intensive and long-term treatment makes it very difficult for him to function normally, so every day is a struggle for him to live like other children. October 9, 2024
