Our son is at the very beginning of a very long and difficult oncological treatment. He is 4 years old and until recently he was a healthy, happy child. In an instant, our life came to a halt – diagnosis: acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). We have completed the first treatment protocol, which was supposed to last 33 days, but due to severe complications in our case, it lasted as long as 2.5 months. The entire treatment will take about 104 weeks.

December without the festive sparkle

Time was no longer on our side. First came sepsis. Piotr's condition deteriorated rapidly, and every hour brought a threat to his life. Within a short time, a dramatic life-saving operation was performed. On December 4, his large intestine perforated in six places and he went into septic shock. Every minute was a struggle for Piotr's survival.
In this condition, he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, where the most difficult fight for his life began. Three days later, another operation was necessary. A loop of the small intestine became evaginated, and Piotr remained in the ICU.
The third operation took place during Christmas. The wound had opened up, peritoneal fluid was leaking, and gangrene had set in. At that time, Piotruś was already in the intensive oncology ward, and that is where he returned after the operation.
We spent the Christmas season between hospital rooms, the intensive care unit, and the intensive oncology care unit, fighting alongside our son for every breath, amid drug-resistant bacteria and devastating chemotherapy.

A superhero trapped in his own body

Complex treatments and advanced medical procedures have changed little Piotr's body forever. However, we still see in his eyes the courage he knows from stories about his favorite superheroes.
The biggest blow to the energetic four-year-old was severe polyneuropathy, a result of neurotoxic treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The nerve damage meant that Piotr could no longer walk or even sit up on his own. Every attempt to move became a struggle against pain.

Let's help Peter return to his childhood

We are raising funds for the only real chance to improve his condition: intensive neurological and motor rehabilitation, treatment of complications, a specialized diet, and transportation to specialists.
We also want Piotruś to be able to learn and play, despite his long stays in the hospital. The funds raised will provide him with the care of a speech therapist, specialized rehabilitation equipment, and therapeutic toys. He needs fine motor skills exercise kits, sensory mats, and educational aids that will allow him to exercise his hands through play, which is crucial for regaining finger function after polyneuropathy.
Piotruś requires round-the-clock care. Due to the risk of falls, severe neuropathic pain, and ongoing cancer treatment, he cannot be left without constant adult supervision. In practice, this means that his parents have had to give up their jobs.
The situation is challenging for us not only emotionally, but also financially – especially in view of several years of therapy.

We live in limbo between home and hospital

Each donation brings Piotr one step closer to leaving the hospital ward and entering kindergarten. These are minutes of invaluable rehabilitation. It is a chance for us, as parents, to give our son mobility and at least a semblance of the childhood that was so brutally taken away from him.
This is just the beginning of our journey. We know that we have many long months of fighting for our child's health and independence ahead of us. We don't want to waste precious time on rehabilitation and treatment, which must continue alongside chemotherapy.
