Unusual symptoms

In late November 2023, our son Olek came down with what seemed like a common infection and began taking antibiotics. Soon after, a rash appeared, followed by numerous bruises on his legs, which alarmed us.

The doctor ordered blood tests. The results revealed unexpected findings: blasts were detected, and mononucleosis was also confirmed. A series of further tests and consultations began.

Diagnosis and treatment

A short time later, we received a diagnosis that changed our lives forever: acute lymphoblastic leukemia, type B. In an instant, our world came to a standstill, and the fight for our son’s health became our top priority.

Because of the mutation that was detected, Olek was placed on the high-risk treatment protocol. A long and extremely difficult battle began.

Months of treatment meant repeated hospital stays and many serious complications. There was a time when our son didn’t have the strength to walk for days on end. He suffered from sepsis, pneumonia, and many other complications that put his body through yet more trials.

Resume

Despite all the difficulties, we kept moving forward. Every improvement gave us hope that the worst was behind us. Just as we began to believe we were returning to normal, we received another devastating piece of news. A relapse.

One word that once again robbed us of our peace of mind and forced us to start the fight all over again.

Unfortunately, the recurrence of the disease brought with it further hardships. Serious complications arose, including intestinal obstruction and pulmonary fungal infection. Every day was filled with fear and uncertainty about what tomorrow would bring. At one point, the doctors decided to start biologic therapy.

A home away from home

Shortly thereafter, we arrived at Przylądek Nadziei in Wrocław, which became our second home. Olek underwent radiation therapy and a bone marrow transplant. Today, we are still in the transplant unit, waiting for the results and hoping that the worst is behind us.

Family

Olek’s sister, Alicja, stayed at home with Dad. She misses her brother and mom very much. This separation is hard on our whole family. Her grandparents are helping take care of her, and we are very grateful to them.

Despite all the challenges he faces, Olek is a brave boy. Whenever he can forget about his illness, even for a moment, he builds with LEGO bricks and plays with toy cars.

Help

The costs associated with his treatment are very high, which is why we are asking for your support with all our hearts. Every donation and every kind word brings Olek closer to recovery and a return to a normal childhood. Thank you for all your help and for standing with us in this most important battle.
